Lament for Indianapolis
/Lament.
To publicly demonstrate a grief or sorrow.
I was leading the meeting this morning and lament was the only word that felt fitting.
For my hometown (Indianapolis), rocked by the violence of a mass shooting.
For Adam Toledo, shot dead with his hands up.
For those in the hospital, dying of COVID.
And it was good that I began with lament. Because one of the men had been up all night, waiting for words from his loved ones who work at FedEx.
If I had just jumped into business as usual, what would we have missed?
Expressing our humanity through shared sorrow, not just to the Internet but with our colleagues and friends, is vital. It is part of the path towards healing and meaningful change.
Try this phrasing...
"I am sad/outraged/exhausted/heavy too. The news today has been hard. Let's go gently together..."
